“Flavours That Unite: Inside the STC Recipe Rebels Kitchen”
"A Pinch of Passion, a Dash of Togetherness"
Toronto, June 2025 — Since its formation in April 2025, the STC Recipe Rebels have been stirring up excitement in the community kitchen. Meeting every Thursday at Unit 402, 3852 Finch Avenue East, this vibrant group of cooking enthusiasts, members of the Senior Tamils’ Centre of Ontario, gather to share recipes, taste mouth-watering dishes, and exchange tips and techniques from kitchens near and far.
Each week, the STC Recipe Rebels dive into a colorful world of culinary exploration, bringing together time-honored traditions and bold new Flavours. The sessions are a true celebration of food and fellowship, where hearty soups are described in rich detail, refreshing salads are reimagined with local twists, and rice dishes are inspired with layers of spice and texture. From nostalgic baked treats to festive favorites, every gathering is a feast for the imagination.

The air is filled not with the sizzle of cooking, but with lively conversations, cherished memories, and the vivid storytelling of recipes passed down through generations. The group thrives on more than just ingredients — it thrives on community, curiosity, and connection. Whether it’s exchanging tips, uncovering hidden family recipes, or discovering new cuisines, each session becomes a warm and welcoming space for sharing, learning, and celebrating the joy of food.
Whether it’s exchanging secret ingredients, sharing a clever shortcut, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee over stories of past meals, the group thrives on more than just recipes — it thrives on community, curiosity, and connection. Here, food becomes more than nourishment; it becomes a bridge between generations, a spark for creativity, and a reminder that some of life’s best moments happen around a table.
As the STC Recipe Rebels continue to grow, so does their mission — connecting people through food, stories, and shared joy. Every recipe is more than a dish; it's a bridge between cultures, generations, and hearts.

A Taste of Tradition: Mango Chutney by Sagunthala Ganesh
As part of our celebration of home-style cooking, here’s a crowd favourite from the STC Recipe Rebels — a sweet, tangy, and spicy Mango Chutney that pairs beautifully with curd rice, chapatis, bread, or even crunchy snacks.
Ingredients
2 semi-ripe green mangoes (washed, seeds removed, cut into ½-inch pieces with skin)
100g jaggery
1 tsp red chilli powder
¼ tsp turmeric powder
2 dry red chillies
2 green chillies (slit)
10 curry leaves
1 tsp cinnamon powder
1 tsp asafetida (perungayam)
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp urid dal
2 tbsp gingelly oil (sesame oil)
Salt to taste
Method
Prep the mangoes: Cut them into ½-inch pieces with the skin. Set aside.
Start tempering: In a thick pot or Dutch oven, heat gingelly oil over a medium flame. Add mustard seeds and urid dal, sauté for a few seconds.
Add dry red chillies, green chillies, curry leaves, and half of the asafoetida. Stir well.
Add mango pieces, red chilli powder, turmeric, and salt. Mix thoroughly.
Add ½ cup water, cover, and cook for 2–3 minutes.
In a separate pan, melt jaggery with ¼ cup water on a low flame. Once dissolved, filter it and add to the mango mix.
Boil for another 1–2 minutes until mangoes are tender.
Add cinnamon powder and the remaining asafetida. Turn off the stove.
Adjust salt to taste. Let it rest, covered, for 5 minutes.
Store in a clean glass container.
Serving Suggestion: This chutney is a fantastic side dish with curd rice, chapati, breads, or savory snacks — full of flavor and homemade goodness.

At the heart of the STC Recipe Rebels is a dynamic duo whose passion, leadership, and dedication have truly brought this initiative to life: Raj and Indra. As the guiding forces behind the group, they are the pillars who keep the kitchen fires burning — not just literally, but in spirit too. From planning weekly gatherings to curating diverse menus and ensuring everyone feels welcome, Raj and Indra have poured their hearts into building a community where cooking is more than a chore — it’s a celebration.
Raj brings his organizational flair and deep cultural knowledge to the table, helping the group stay rooted in tradition while exploring global Flavours. Indra, with her warm presence and creative spirit, infuses each session with encouragement, fun, and flair, making even first-time cooks feel confident and proud of their dishes.
Gesture of love and inclusion
As part of its ongoing commitment to community well-being, the Senior Tamils' Centre (STC) is proud to announce a heartfelt new initiative: the delivery of home-cooked food parcels to seniors in our community.
On June 19, 2025, STC distributed 20 food parcels to residents of St. Paul’s Lamoreaux Centre, marking the beginning of this meaningful program.
Inspired by the spirit of care, connection, and cultural nourishment, this initiative supports seniors who may face challenges with mobility, health, or access to freshly prepared meals. These thoughtfully curated parcels include nutritious, flavourful, and culturally familiar dishes, lovingly prepared by the recipe rebels members.
Each parcel is more than just a meal — it's a gesture of love and inclusion. With dishes inspired by traditional Tamil and global home cooking, we aim to bring comfort and warmth to every recipient’s table. Beyond food, this initiative is about reducing isolation, honoring our elders, and reminding them that they are never alone. Whether it's a hearty soup, a fragrant rice dish, or a sweet treat made with care, each delivery carries the powerful message: you are remembered, and you are loved.
💬 A Grateful Note from One of Our Recipients
Kanages Nadarajah, a senior who received a home-cooked lunch parcel, shared this touching message with us:
“Thanks a lot, STC, for today’s lunch. It was delicious, hot hot—and senior-friendly—not oily, and not spicy. The combination of curries was excellent. When it comes to seniors who have no choice but to keep on eating stale food reheated in the microwave, this meal felt like a blessing. Tamil there is a saying உண்டி கொடுத்தோர் உயிர் கொடுத்தோர். This is very true. When it comes to the Seniors who have no choice but to keep on eating stale food that is warmed up in the microwave. Thanks to STC Recipe Rebels.
Next on the Menu: STC to Host Cookery Demonstrations for Seniors
Building on the success of recipe sharing and home-cooked food parcel deliveries, the Senior Tamils' Centre (STC) is excited to launch the next flavorful chapter in our community kitchen journey: Cookery Demonstrations for Seniors.
These hands-on sessions will give seniors the opportunity to experience the joy of cooking different cuisines firsthand, guided by passionate home cooks, professional chefs, and talented community members. From traditional Tamil dishes to global favourite like Mediterranean salads, Italian pasta, Japanese sushi, and more, our demonstrations aim to spark curiosity, build skills, and bring people together over shared meals and memories.
Each session will be interactive, inclusive, and adapted to all skill levels, so whether you’re a seasoned home cook or just starting out, there’s something to enjoy and learn. Seniors will be encouraged to touch, taste, ask questions, and even try cooking along in a supportive and welcoming environment. These demonstrations aren’t just about cooking — they’re about confidence, creativity, and connection. Participants will leave with not only new recipes but also new friendships, inspiration, and a greater sense of independence in the kitchen.
We warmly invite our seniors to join us in this delicious journey of learning, laughter, and togetherness — because cooking is more fun when it’s shared.
📝 Final Note
What began as a simple idea — to share recipes — has grown into something much more: a vibrant community, a celebration of heritage, and a joyful exchange of flavors, memories, and love. The STC Recipe Rebels have shown that food has the power to connect, comfort, and inspire. Through every handwritten note, every tip passed across the table, and every dish lovingly described, we’ve created more than a collection of recipes — we’ve created a tapestry of togetherness.
May these recipes bring warmth to your kitchen, smiles to your table, and remind you that the best meals are the ones we share.
With gratitude and Flavour,
The Senior Tamils’ Centre of Ontario
